Project 1; Still Life

My Process;

My project started with a compositional photograph. This photo was intended to have the vague shapes of a human on a computer, however everything is… off about it. From the candles to the skeletal hand and tech arms, and the other hand with 6 fingers. I would have to say the most difficult part of the drawing and shading process was making the right hand look like a 3d printed object; too much smoothing and it looked too organic, too little and it looked unfinished. To create this piece I had used cross hatching onto a sketch I had drawn, this hatching was then mostly smoothed out with a blending stump. My most well executed part is the skeletal hand and the detailing on it and the connected arm made of my camera and camcorder. If I were to re-do part of it, I would have properly measured the paper in comparison to the composition photo. The original photo had been slightly cluttered on purpose as to force the viewer to analyze it deeply to truly understand it and pick out the objects within it, and I feel I had to spread it out more due to the page being slightly longer which had gotten rid of some of the clutter. During class time I had taken feedback from our teacher to make my piece further defined and to make it seem more realistic and 3 dimensional on the flat page I had started out on. A piece of media that compliments my work is the 2011 series “Black Mirror” as many of the episodes similarly follow marketed technology for the sake of profit and centralization rather than the progression of humanity.
